Dubai Civil Defence to Launch Home’s Safety Package soon

Maj.Gen.Expert Rashid Thani Rashid ALMatrooshi, Director General of Dubai Civil Defence, has confirmed that Department of Dubai Civil Defence will soon launch Home’s Safety package. Proposed package which comes as a part of DCD’s ongoing efforts to ensure safety, consist the following:

1-    Safety package at homes

2-    Program to embed preventive awareness and safety behavior amongst families

“Due to its toxic gases and particles fire smoke is considered most risk imposer during fire accident, hence installation of smoke detectors at homes deemed necessary to ensure families are alerted before thick smoke is formed making escape from it impossible”

He added.
“ Home’s safety package comprises a number of wireless smoke detectors dispersed in the kitchen, all rooms and other home facilities, and they simply function as one network by being connected to each other via Bluetooth technology, so alert sound is immediately heard all over the place once smoke is detected by any one of the dispersed devices , helping residents to swiftly evacuate the danger area before smoke shocking them” He illustrated.

"Smoke, and not fire itself, is the main silent killer during fire accident, as 70% of fire’s fatalities is attributed to smoke suffocation. Smoke risk increases always if people are sleeping, as no one feels it. Scientific studies conducted revealed that suffocation causes fire’s death more than fire itself”

He added.

Many of homes fire accidents occurred, where people died because of smoke suffocation, have almost the same scenario repeated each and every time, fire originates in ground floor, with no ventilation vents in upper stories, then smoke ascends to form dense clouds, and if occupants are sleeping result would be disastrous, even when awaken some of them will certainly act incorrectly, for example avoid opening the window in order not to allow Oxygen in, because it increases the fire, however this correct, but facing the smoke instead is even worse. Therefore, it would be better when fire breaks in ground floor and the area becomes full of smoke to open one of upstairs’ room window and door to allow smoke pass out from the house, then should make a move to any room away from smoke, hide and closes its door and try to get Oxygen supply via the window and awaits till rescue team arrives.

He further illustrated :

Main causes of Home’s fire according to Investigations results are:

  • Lack of preventive awareness
  • Weakness in old houses safety measures
  • Worn-out networks and electrical devices
  • Worn-out Gas pipes and systems
  • Conducting unapproved construction alterations inside the houses
  • Lack of ignition sources control.

Adoption of Proper preventive safety behavior by the residents of the house is the main factor to save lives, as personal’s proper safety attitude is responsible by more than 50% to ensure his own safety as well as of others during fire emergency. So, it deems necessary to raise public awareness on potential risks at home and ways to avoid them, and the importance of smoke detectors and other correct safety practices to be followed in homes at the times of fire emergency.

Based on this, Dubai Civil defence intends to launch a Home safety campaign, which focuses on fire protection measures and proper actions to be taken if fire erupts in home. People are recommended to creep to escape smoke, air remain clean up to 60cm above ground level, so creeping help to keep your head within this safe area.
